When a man examines his body in the shower in the morning or in the evening after a workout, he should be attentive. He is probably one of those men who are at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer, and in Germany, this number reaches about 700 men a year.

The Clinic for Radiation Oncology and Radiation Medicine at the Helios Hospital Bad Saarow is equipped with the latest radiation therapy technology. After the first state-of-the-art therapy unit was installed last year, the second sophisticated radiotherapy system also went into operation at the beginning of June. Thirty-two years ago, Prof. Dr. med. Peter Lamesch first treated Mrs. Gerlinde Keil. Together with his colleagues, the physician diagnosed the then 33-year-old mother of two children with a rare hereditary condition: multiple endocrine neoplasia. The disease is characterized by malignant tumors of the thyroid gland as well as benign disorders of the adrenal and parathyroid glands. The condition is passed on to family members through a genetic defect.

With the introduction of the Unit-Dose system, medication administration in Helios hospitals is being standardized and optimized. The modern system helps to further enhance patient safety and improve workflows in everyday clinical practice.

At the end of 2025, lung cancer was diagnosed in Grit Otto-Moritz (60). Doctors at Helios Hanseklinikum Stralsund were able to gently remove the tumor using the DaVinci surgical robot. This cancer is gone, but other bad news casts a shadow over the new year.

Helios Park Hospital Leipzig is participating as one of 30 centers worldwide in the international randomized multicenter study “DEL-LIVER” and has become the first center in Germany authorized to enroll patients.

Norbert Hell has been a passionate road cyclist not only since his retirement. A sudden and significant drop in performance initially did not make him think of cancer. At Helios Hospital Erfurt, the new robot-assisted bronchoscopy system ION has been successfully put into operation. It enables doctors to reach much deeper areas of the lungs and collect samples from suspicious lung tissue. The first patients were examined using this innovative technology earlier this week.

Helios Hanseatic Hospital Stralsund has appointed a new senior physician for its surgical department. Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Leif Schiffmann is an expert in proctology and rectal surgery and previously served for many years as chief physician at Helios Hospital Aue.The 55-year-old will now contribute his expertise to the hospital’s certified colorectal cancer center. He succeeds Dr. med. Stefan Heinrich, who will leave the hospital at the end of May.
