Helios is implementing a modern medication dispensing system

With the introduction of the Unit-Dose system, medication administration in Helios hospitals is being standardized and optimized. The modern system helps to further enhance patient safety and improve workflows in everyday clinical practice.

Unit-Dose is a modern system of medication supply in hospitals. Medications are prepared individually for each patient, packaged separately, and provided exactly according to the physician’s prescription. The goal is to ensure safe and traceable medication administration.

Medication dispensing follows a multi-step, safeguarded process:

  • Physicians prescribe medications digitally via the electronic patient record.

  • The hospital pharmacy carefully reviews each prescription.

  • Medications are automatically assembled on a patient-specific basis.

  • Each single dose is hygienically packaged and clearly labeled.

  • Nursing staff receive clearly organized daily medication sets for safe administration.

What Unit-Dose can do

The Unit-Dose system supports safe and standardized medication dispensing in hospitals. After careful medical review, the system takes over the pre-sorting of medications for inpatients. The automated machine packages the medications into small sachets, known as blisters, and provides them individually for each patient, separately packaged and exactly according to the physician’s prescription.

The system is integrated into the digital medication process and uses data from the electronic patient record. For patients, this represents the safest form of medication supply.

How modern medication management works in hospitals

Once physicians prescribe the required medications digitally via the electronic patient record, clinical pharmacists carefully review each prescription. Only after pharmaceutical approval does the Unit-Dose system begin the automated, patient-specific single-dose packaging. Solid oral medications such as tablets and capsules can be packaged at a maximum speed of 30 to 60 blisters per minute. In this way, around 10,000 medication doses can be reliably prepared each day.

Each blister pouch is clearly labeled, for example with the active ingredient, strength, dosage, and time of administration. Additional technical checks ensure that both the contents and the quantity are correct.

The medication blisters are then distributed to the wards. In Helios hospitals, patients can scan a QR code on the blister to access information about the respective medication.

This closed-loop medication process ensures that all parties involved work with the same up-to-date information. For patients, this creates clarity and safety in medication administration.

Benefits for patients

The Unit-Dose system makes medication administration in everyday hospital practice clear and transparent. Medications are clearly assigned, properly labeled, and sorted according to the time of intake. This allows patients to see which medication should be taken, when it should be taken, and what it is for.

Modern technology supports the processes in the background. Responsibility for treatment always remains with the medical professionals. If questions or uncertainties arise, nursing staff and physicians remain available as usual.
