Radiation Therapy at Helios Hospitals

Radiation therapy is one of the main methods of cancer treatment and can be used either on its own or in combination with surgery and systemic therapy. Helios hospitals in Germany use advanced high-precision radiation technologies designed to target tumors with maximum accuracy while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.

Specialized Helios centers offer a wide range of treatment options, from stereotactic radiation therapy and radiosurgery to intraoperative radiation therapy and re-irradiation. Each treatment plan is tailored individually based on the type and location of the tumor, the stage of the disease, and any previous treatments.

Intraoperative radiation therapy for complex tumors

Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch offers intraoperative electron radiation therapy (IOERT), a highly precise technique in which the tumor area is irradiated directly during surgery. By providing direct access to the tumor bed, IOERT allows physicians to deliver a targeted dose of radiation to the area at the highest risk of residual cancer cells while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues and organs.

IOERT can be used in the treatment of selected breast tumors, tumors of the abdominal and pelvic regions, as well as soft tissue sarcomas. The technique is integrated into a comprehensive treatment approach, combining the capabilities of oncological surgery and radiation therapy within an individualized treatment plan.

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch also offers a broad range of advanced technologies, including IMRT/VMAT, stereotactic radiation therapy and radiosurgery, brachytherapy, and respiratory-gated radiation therapy. The optimal treatment method and its combination with surgery or systemic therapy are determined by a multidisciplinary team based on the type, location, and stage of the tumor.

Radiosurgery for brain tumors and metastases

At Helios Hospital Erfurt, high-precision radiation therapy plays an important role in the comprehensive treatment of brain tumors and intracranial metastases. For small, well-defined lesions, stereotactic radiosurgery can be used to deliver a high dose of radiation directly to the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

A particular focus is radiosurgical treatment using CyberKnife technology. This non-invasive method enables highly precise irradiation and may be used for selected primary brain tumors, metastases, and other intracranial lesions. The choice between radiosurgery, fractionated radiation therapy, and other treatment options depends on the diagnosis as well as the size, number, and location of the lesions.

Treatment is planned in close collaboration between specialists in radiation oncology, neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, and medical oncology. At the Neuro-Oncology Center of Helios Hospital Erfurt, each case is evaluated from a multidisciplinary perspective to determine the most appropriate treatment strategy for the individual patient.

Re-irradiation for recurrent tumors

At Helios Hospital Schwerin, one of the specialized areas of expertise is re-irradiation for patients who have previously undergone radiation therapy. Advanced treatment planning techniques make it possible, in selected clinical situations, to irradiate a recurrent tumor while precisely calculating the new radiation dose and taking into account the exposure of healthy tissues during previous treatment.

Re-irradiation may be considered, in particular, for recurrent tumors of the lung, rectum, and head and neck region. The feasibility of treatment is always assessed individually based on the location and size of the tumor, the previously administered radiation dose, the time elapsed since the initial course of therapy, and the condition of surrounding organs and tissues.

The Department of Radiation Oncology in Schwerin also specializes in high-precision techniques, including IMRT/VMAT, stereotactic radiation therapy, respiratory-gated irradiation, and treatment planning using advanced imaging. This enables specialists to develop an optimal treatment strategy for both primary tumors and complex cases of recurrent disease.
