New chief physician for pain management in Niederberg and Wuppertal

Helios Hospital Niederberg welcomes a new chief physician: Filiz Odabasi-Özdemir has taken over as Head of Schmerzklinikum NRW, a specialized pain management center with two locations in Niederberg and Wuppertal.

Filiz Odabasi-Özdemir is a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery with many years of experience in treating complex chronic pain conditions. She also holds an additional qualification in specialized pain management. Her other areas of expertise include conservative spine care and osteology. "With Filiz Odabasi-Özdemir, we are welcoming an experienced physician who combines medical expertise with extensive clinical and leadership experience," says Lukas Trilling, Managing Director of Helios Hospital Niederberg. "We are delighted that she has agreed to take on this role."

Hanna Gerhardes, Commercial Site Manager in Velbert, adds: "The treatment of chronic pain relies heavily on collaboration between different medical specialties and professional groups. Filiz Odabasi-Özdemir is very familiar with this approach from her previous work and will be joining well-established multidisciplinary teams at our facilities."

Most recently, Odabasi-Özdemir served as Lead Senior Physician in the Department of Conservative Orthopedics and Pain Management at St. Bernhard Hospital in Kamp-Lintfort. There, she primarily treated patients with orthopedic conditions and chronic pain while also taking on responsibilities as Deputy Chief Physician.

She succeeds Dr. Thomas Cegla, who has retired after many years of service.

Pain is real

One principle is particularly important to the pain specialist in her approach to patient care: "Pain is real." Chronic pain can develop into a condition of its own and affect many aspects of daily life, from mobility and sleep to work, family relationships, and social interactions. "That is why we look beyond individual medical findings and consider the whole person, taking into account all the factors that influence their pain condition," explains Odabasi-Özdemir.

This is precisely the approach behind multimodal pain management. It combines medical treatment, movement-based therapies, and psychotherapy while addressing physical, psychological, and social factors. The goal is not only to reduce pain intensity but also to help patients develop strategies to better manage their symptoms, become more active, and regain their quality of life.

Pain medicine meets orthopedics and osteology

With her additional expertise in orthopedics and osteology, Odabasi-Özdemir brings valuable new perspectives to pain medicine. Chronic pain, degenerative diseases of the spine and joints, and osteoporosis often occur together and require an interdisciplinary approach. "I look forward to working with the teams in Niederberg and Wuppertal to care for our patients and further develop the existing services at both locations," says Odabasi-Özdemir.
