Olympic hopeful Finn Sonnekalb successfully undergoes surgery

19-year-old speed skater Finn Sonnekalb suffered a fractured collarbone after a fall during training. At Helios Hospital Erfurt, he underwent surgery to stabilize the fracture and support a swift recovery and return to training.

Finn Sonnekalb has been speed skating since the age of six and won three gold medals at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in South Korea. On Friday, June 26, he fell during inline skating training at the Erfurt ice sports center. He was immediately taken by ambulance to the emergency department at Helios Hospital Erfurt, where he was diagnosed with a fractured collarbone — the first broken bone of his athletic career.

Following a consultation, Prof. Thomas Mückley, Chief Physician of the Department of Orthopedics, Trauma and Hand Surgery at Helios Hospital Erfurt, performed the surgery. “The surgery went according to plan and without complications. For a young, well-trained athlete like Finn Sonnekalb, the prospects for recovery are very good following stable fixation of the fracture. The important thing now is to increase physical activity carefully and gradually,” says Prof. Thomas Mückley.

For the next six weeks, Sonnekalb will follow a training program adapted to his injury, after which the intensity will be gradually increased. The goal is to restore his full athletic performance in time for the start of the season in September. “I want to get fit again as quickly as possible and be ready to give it my all when the season starts in September,” says Finn Sonnekalb, who before his injury trained for around four hours a day on inline skates or ice skates, combined with extensive cycling sessions.

The athlete also has strong support from his family. His parents have fully supported his athletic career since he began speed skating at the age of six.
