Helios Krefeld: First robot-assisted bypass surgery
The method is particularly gentle and further optimizes patients’ recovery by reducing tissue trauma and postoperative pain. With the help of a surgical robot, the internal mammary artery is precisely exposed and used as a bypass graft. The procedure is carried out without opening the chest. An 85-year-old patient was the first to benefit from this complex technique. He recovered well from the operation and was discharged home after a few days in hospital.
The successful procedure is the result of months of intensive preparation and comprehensive training of the entire interdisciplinary team. “Worldwide, this procedure is available in only a few specialized centers,” explains the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the Niederrhein Heart Center. “We continuously focus on new, advanced and particularly gentle treatment options for our patients. The use of robotics in cardiac surgery completes our broad spectrum of minimally invasive procedures.” He adds:
"We continuously implement new, advanced and especially gentle therapy options for our patients."
With more than 1,200 heart operations per year — the majority performed using minimally invasive techniques — the Krefeld Hospital is one of the leading cardiac surgery centers in Germany. In order to consistently offer patients gentle treatment approaches, the Krefeld cardiac surgery department is continuously expanding its range of services. “The introduction of robot-assisted bypass procedures marks another milestone in cardiac medicine in Krefeld. My special thanks go to the entire team whose dedication, training and collaboration made this progress possible,” emphasizes Hospital Managing Director Birger Meßthaler.
At Helios Hospital Krefeld, robot-assisted surgical techniques are already being used in visceral surgery, urology, gynecology and thoracic surgery. They enable experienced surgeons to perform highly complex procedures and cancer operations — which previously required open surgery — using keyhole techniques. At the same time, already minimally invasive procedures can be carried out even more gently and precisely.
