Helios München West: Prof. Dr. Sebastian Kufner expands cardiology expertise
Prof. Dr. med. Christopher Reithmann, who has been head of the department since 2009, will gradually focus on interventional electrophysiology and rhythmology in the coming year.
Outstanding professional and scientific qualifications
Prof. Kufner is moving from the German Heart Center Munich at the Technical University of Munich, where he worked for many years as a senior physician in the field of interventional cardiology, to Helios Hospital München West.
His academic and professional career includes studying human medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University and the Technical University of Munich as well as specialist training at the Klinikum rechts der Isar and the German Heart Center Munich.
In addition to his expertise in the field of interventional therapy of coronary heart disease, complex coronary interventions, stent implantation and ablative procedures (intravascular lithotripsy, rotablation, orbital artherectomy) and intravascular imaging as well as coronary physiology testing, his expertise also includes mechanical circulatory support systems (ECMO, Impella) as well as interventional therapy for pulmonary artery embolism and hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM).
Prof. Kufner has been conducting research in the field of interventional cardiology since 2006, when he was still a doctoral student. In 2016, he habilitated on treatment strategies for diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease. In 2022, he was appointed adjunct professor at the Technical University of Munich in an accelerated procedure due to his exceptional publication record. With over 100 original papers and a cumulative impact factor of more than 1000 points, Prof. Kufner is one of the leading experts in his field.
His research on in-stent restenosis and long-term outcomes after coronary interventions has been recognized internationally - including the Young Investigator Award of the German Society of Cardiology (2017) and the Young Author Achievement Award of the American College of Cardiology (2018). Most recently, the German Society of Cardiology recognized his work in the field of interventional cardiology with the prestigious Andreas Grüntzig Award (2021).
Prof. Kufner is also a reviewer for various international and national journals such as The Lancet, European Heart Journal, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Eurointervention and Herz.
As Principal Investigator, Prof. Kufner led multicenter studies and presented his work at renowned international conferences of the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology. In addition to his clinical work, he is involved in the training of students and junior medical staff and was a deputy lecturer at the German Heart Center Munich for many years.

A team for the heart
Prof. Sebastian Kufner will manage the clinic together with Prof. Christopher Reithmann until mid-2025. From then on, Prof. Kufner will assume organizational responsibility and management of the clinic. As head physician, Prof. Reithmann will concentrate on the management of interventional electrophysiology and rhythmology and, with his special expertise, will not only continue but even intensify care in this area. The close cooperation between the two experts will guarantee the continuous further development of the department.
