New treatment method for atrial fibrillation

To provide patients with modern treatment options, Helios Vogtland Hospital Plauen is expanding its range of cardiology services to include Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA). This new technology for treating atrial fibrillation is considered particularly precise and minimally invasive.

Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias. In Germany alone, more than 1.6 million people are affected. The condition can cause palpitations, a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, or reduced exercise tolerance. However, some patients experience hardly any noticeable symptoms. If left untreated, atrial fibrillation can increase the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

In atrial fibrillation, the electrical signals that trigger the arrhythmia often originate in specific areas of the atria. The aim of treatment is to selectively interrupt these abnormal signals and thereby restore a normal heart rhythm. Unlike conventional methods that use heat or cold, Pulsed Field Ablation uses short electrical pulses. These pulses selectively target heart muscle cells while largely sparing surrounding structures such as the esophagus, blood vessels, and important nerves. Dr. Christian Bietau, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine II at Helios Vogtland Hospital Plauen, adds:

“Pulsed Field Ablation represents an important advance in the treatment of atrial fibrillation. This method allows us to target the affected areas of the heart with great precision while providing better protection for the surrounding tissue.”

Another advantage of the new technology is the shorter treatment time. The procedure is performed using a minimally invasive approach with catheters that are advanced through the femoral vein to the heart. For many patients, this means a less invasive treatment and often a faster recovery after the procedure.

Experience to date and the results of clinical studies indicate that the method is highly effective while also offering a favorable safety profile. As a result, Pulsed Field Ablation is becoming increasingly important worldwide. “For people with atrial fibrillation, this provides another modern treatment option. We are convinced that this technology will play a major role in shaping the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias in the coming years,” says Dr. Bietau.

With the introduction of Pulsed Field Ablation, Helios Vogtland Hospital Plauen is strengthening its expertise in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and expanding the range of treatment options available to patients in the region.
