Erfurt: New chief of general and visceral surgery
For Markus Mille, this appointment marks a return: until 2023, he had already worked at Helios Hospital Erfurt as Senior Consultant and Deputy Head of Department before moving to Hospital Eisenach as Chief Physician. He has now returned to Helios Hospital Erfurt. As a result, patients will benefit from further strengthened specialized care for complex diseases of the digestive tract.
Mille is regarded as one of Germany’s most experienced specialists in robot-assisted surgery. In 2020, he established the robotic surgery program in the Department of Visceral Surgery. At that time, he performed Thuringia’s first fully robot-assisted esophagectomy (surgical removal of the esophagus). Surgeons from Germany and abroad come to learn his techniques.
At Helios Hospital Erfurt, Dr. Mille aims to further develop both the Department of General and Visceral Surgery and the Visceral Oncology Center. Key priorities include the treatment of complex digestive tract diseases, the advancement of oncological care structures, and the targeted expansion of minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgical procedures.
This development will also benefit the Helios Thüringen Mitte hospital cluster, which includes facilities in Blankenhain, Bleicherode, Gotha, and Erfurt. Through closer cross-site collaboration, specialized surgical expertise will be consolidated, treatment pathways will be further optimized, and patients throughout the region will gain reliable access to modern visceral surgical and oncological care.
“Returning to Erfurt is a special step for me, both professionally and personally. As a tertiary-care hospital, Helios Hospital Erfurt offers outstanding conditions for combining modern visceral surgery, oncological expertise, and innovative robotic procedures at the highest level. Together with my team, I look forward to further developing the department. All of this will be achieved with the highest professional standards and a patient-centered approach to care.” — Dr. Dr. med. univ. Markus Mille
