10 years of scientific work by Professor Michael Stoffel

Professor Michael Stoffel is one of the founding members of the specialist journal Die Wirbelsäule and, as an editor, played a key role in shaping its scientific and professional development for over a decade.

For more than a decade, Professor Michael Stoffel, Chief Physician in Helios Hospital Krefeld, has actively contributed to the development of spinal medicine in Germany. As a founding member and long-standing editor of the specialist journal Die Wirbelsäule (“The Spine”), he worked to make the latest scientific findings, medical innovations, and developments in the field accessible to German-speaking medical professionals. After ten years, he has now stepped down from his editorial role, passing the responsibility on to the next generation. The journal's anniversary issue recognizes his many years of dedication and contributions.

When the first issue of Die Wirbelsäule was conceived in 2016, the idea behind it was clear: to present international scientific findings in an accessible way, provide expert analysis, and make them available to German-speaking medical professionals. Today, the journal is the official publication of the German Spine Society (DWG) and the Austrian Society for Spine Surgery (Spine.at), serving as an important continuing education platform for physicians. Professor Michael Stoffel, together with two colleagues specializing in orthopedics and trauma surgery, was one of the three founding editors responsible for the journal's content from the very beginning.

For ten years, Professor Michael Stoffel played a key role in shaping the journal's editorial direction. He developed key topics, recruited renowned authors to contribute articles, and oversaw their scientific and editorial review. He also contributed his own expertise, writing articles on major topics and certified continuing medical education (CME) materials. Through this work, he helped translate the latest scientific findings and developments into practical knowledge for medical professionals while promoting professional exchange.

Scientific commitment and clinical leadership in Krefeld

Professor Michael Stoffel has always combined his editorial responsibilities with his clinical work. As Chief Physician of the Department of Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery at Helios Klinikum Krefeld, he and his team oversee a broad range of neurosurgical treatments. His main areas of specialization include neuro-oncology and the treatment of complex spinal disorders.

His professional expertise is further recognized by the Excellence and Master certifications awarded by the German Spine Society (DWG). The combination of clinical experience, scientific research, and commitment to continuing medical education shapes not only his work as an editor but also his professional approach at Helios Klinikum Krefeld, a maximum-care hospital and university campus of HMU Health and Medical University. He also serves as a Helios specialty group leader.
