50 years of excellence: ENDO-Hospital celebrates its anniversary
Today, ENDO-Hospital performs over 9,500 surgeries annually, making it one of Europe's leading centers of expertise in joint replacement surgery. The high volume of procedures ensures extensive experience and expertise among its specialists, which is internationally recognized as a key indicator of healthcare quality.
“The quality of healthcare is ultimately measured by patient outcomes. We are proud of ENDO-Hospital’s outstanding reputation and the achievements of those who have contributed to its success, both past and present. They have demonstrated the tremendous potential for innovation that emerges when specialization and scientific research work hand in hand.” — Dr. Christian Pawlu, Member of the Fresenius Management Board and CEO of Helios.
Specialization in joint surgery and comprehensive patient care
Quality and patient outcomes are at the heart of ENDO-Hospital's medical strategy. In June 2026, the clinic reached a major milestone with the implantation of its 200,000th artificial joint. Since its founding, hip replacements have accounted for half of all joint implants.
Beyond joint replacement surgery, the clinic specializes in treating knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle conditions, spinal surgery, corrective procedures, sports medicine, care for elite athletes, and sports rehabilitation. “Excellence in joint replacement surgery has always meant much more than simply replacing a joint. It helps people regain their everyday lives, stay active, and discover new possibilities. We support our patients throughout their entire treatment journey — from diagnosis and surgery to rehabilitation and digital follow-up care.” — adds Dr. Thorsten Gehrke, Medical Director of Helios ENDO-Hospital Hamburg.
A hospital of international renown
Today, ENDO-Hospital, located in Hamburg’s Altona district, employs around 600 staff members. Two-thirds of its patients come from across Germany. In addition to German patients, the clinic also welcomes international patients seeking specialized orthopedic care. ENDO-Hospital’s international appeal is driven by its strong reputation, built on decades of experience and a high level of expertise in joint replacement and orthopedic surgery.
“ENDO-Hospital has been an integral part of healthcare in Hamburg and far beyond for decades. Since 1976, the clinic has developed into an internationally recognized center of excellence in joint replacement surgery and has played a significant role in shaping the development of modern joint surgery in Germany.” — Philip Wettengel, Managing Director of Helios ENDO-Hospital Hamburg.
ENDO-Hospital works closely with other Helios hospitals in Hamburg and the surrounding region, bringing together medical expertise across different locations. This collaborative approach helps improve the quality of patient care and promotes the efficient use of healthcare resources. Since 2025, these efforts have been further strengthened through a partnership with the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), focusing on patient care, research, and medical education.
ENDO-Hospital has also maintained strong international scientific collaborations for decades. Each year, around 300 visiting physicians come to the specialized hospital in Hamburg to exchange professional knowledge and expertise. “Over the past five decades, ENDO-Hospital Hamburg has demonstrated how specialization can shape the future of Germany’s hospital system: strong healthcare networks that intelligently combine comprehensive patient care with highly specialized medicine,” says Johannes Rasche, Regional Managing Director of Helios, highlighting the clinic’s pioneering role. “Treatment outcomes have been systematically monitored for many years, while treatment approaches have been continuously refined. The future lies in digital technologies supporting these processes and in robotics.”
50 Years of medical excellence
ENDO-Hospital celebrated its anniversary in a festive atmosphere on the clinic’s 10th floor, overlooking Hamburg’s harbor, under the motto “50 Years of Medicine That Moves Lives.” Among the distinguished speakers was Hamburg’s Senator for Health, Melanie Schlotzhauer, who highlighted the important role of ENDO-Hospital in strengthening Hamburg’s position as a leading healthcare hub: “ENDO-Hospital demonstrates the important role that bringing together medical expertise plays in delivering high-quality healthcare. Looking ahead, it is essential to strike the right balance between highly specialized medicine and reliable access to healthcare across all regions. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the clinic’s employees for their daily dedication to people’s health and warmly congratulate ENDO-Hospital on its 50th anniversary.”
