Region

Stately castles and palaces, stunning nature, world-renowned exhibits, a World Heritage Site, exquisite galleries showcasing regional and international art and countless historical sights await you in the Hildesheim region. The city is particularly well known for its churches, with St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church being remarkable examples of the Romanesque religious art of the Holy Roman Empire. UNESCO recognised this in 1985 by adding them both as a single site to its list of World Heritage Sites. With its monumental 13th-century ceiling depicting the genealogy of Christ, St Michael’s is considered one of the most beautiful early Romanesque churches in Germany. As masterpieces of sacred architecture full of artistic treasures, the two churches fascinate both tourists and experts alike. Another attraction is the legendary Thousand-year Rose that is entwined around the apse of the cathedral.
