Helios Hospital Bad Saarow - Interview with Dr. med. Grigorij Nesterov, Head of Breast Center

The certified breast center at Helios Hospital Bad Saarow has had a new head physician for a quarter of a year, and he has already won the hearts of his patients and his team. Dr. med. Grigorij Nesterov, an experienced breast expert in mammography and ultrasound, took up his post on 1 June 2023 with great enthusiasm and a clear goal: to continue to provide breast cancer patients with the highest level of care and to continuously improve treatment options.

Dr. med. Nesterov, you have been the "new guy" at the head of the Breast Center for four months now. How has your time in office been so far?

I'm not really new to Bad Saarow. I worked here for several years as a senior consultant at the Institute of Radiology and worked very closely with the former Head Physician of the Breast Center, Dr. Harry Brunzlow. I learned an enormous amount from him and I am delighted that he is continuing to support us as Senior Consultant.

The position of Head Physician is now new to me. I am delighted to have taken on this challenge. I have a great team and together we have already achieved a lot in the past four months.

Can you explain in a little more detail what you did in the first few months?

One of the first things we did was to expand our diagnostic consultation hours. This was very important to me and is now possible thanks to our dedicated radiology team and the Breast Center. We have already significantly increased our consultation hours and are planning to extend them further, especially in the afternoon.

A second topic that is very close to my heart is the digitization of medical records. We have made faster progress here than we thought. I am pleased that we will probably be completely digital by the end of the year.

We have also rearranged our examination rooms to optimize the examination process. These are sometimes small things with a big impact.

What makes the Bad Saarow Clinic so special for you?

I could give many answers to this, but for me it is of course the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of breast cancer. Our breast center was the first in the state of Brandenburg to be certified in 2004. This means that the experts at our clinic from various disciplines, such as senology, oncology, radiology and pathology, work very closely together to provide holistic care for every patient. This approach makes it possible to develop customized treatment plans and achieve the best results.

What do you like about Bad Saarow?

I now have very strong ties to the region and my family also live here. I don't like anonymity and like it when people know each other.

What does October Breast Cancer Awareness Month mean to you?

Since Breast Cancer Awareness Month was first proclaimed in 1985, Pinktober has been the international symbol for the fight against breast cancer and is intended to raise awareness of the disease and the fight against it. Pink is a reference to the pink ribbon that stands for the fight against breast cancer.

Our Breast Center has been organizing the Breast Symposium for 27 years now. This is the largest training event for medical and nursing staff at our clinic. This year, it will take place on October 7 on the topic of "Side-effect management of current therapies". I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Marén Sawatzki, Head Physician at the Clinic for Senology, who is taking care of the organization with her team.
