Helios Hospital Erfurt has once again been certified as a Pediatric Oncology Center

The Pediatric Oncology Center at Helios Hospital Erfurt continues to meet the high quality standards of the German Cancer Society (DKG). Following a successful review, the center was recertified in 2026. It was first certified in 2018, making it one of the first centers of its kind in Germany.

“The renewed certification confirms the high quality of our medical care and the dedicated work of our entire interdisciplinary team,” says Prof. Dr. Axel Sauerbrey, Head of the Pediatric Oncology Center at Helios Hospital Erfurt. “For families facing a cancer diagnosis in their child in particular, it is important to know that their child will receive treatment in accordance with the highest quality standards and that the entire family will be provided with comprehensive support.”

Around 40 children and adolescents with cancer are treated at the Pediatric Oncology Center each year. The most common diagnoses include leukemia, lymphoma, and brain tumors. Treatment is provided in accordance with the latest scientific standards as part of the therapy optimization studies of the German Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH), for which the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Helios Hospital Erfurt is accredited.

In addition to highly specialized medical treatment, the center’s care concept includes psycho-oncological support, social-medical counseling, and close support for families throughout the treatment process. Care is provided by an interdisciplinary team comprising pediatric and adolescent medicine specialists, pediatric surgeons, radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, as well as specialists from other disciplines and cooperating physicians in private practice.

“The chances of curing children with cancer have steadily improved over the past decades. Today, we are able to successfully treat the vast majority of our young patients. This renewed certification motivates us to continue meeting these high quality standards in the future and to further develop and improve them,”

says Prof. Sauerbrey.

As part of the certification process, the German Cancer Society regularly reviews compliance with a comprehensive set of quality criteria. These include, among other things, the experience of the treatment team, established treatment protocols, interdisciplinary collaboration, and defined minimum case volumes. The successful recertification confirms that the Pediatric Oncology Center meets these high standards.
