Modern Mini-Implant in the fight against prostate cancer:

Since 2003 Prof. Andreas Böhle and his team of radiation therapists and physicians make use of the Seed Brachytherapy in HELIOS Agnes Karll hospital in Bad Schwartau. After 10 years of work the physicians look back at 1,300 successfully treated patients. Therefore the hospital takes a pioneering role in the region and also Germany-wide.

Mildly radioactive metal pins (so-called „Seeds“) are inserted via thin hollow needles in a short operation. The mini-implants remain permanently in the prostate gland. Through the permanent radiation over one year with little side effects the carcinoma is specifically attacked within the prostate while the bordering organs are protected to a large extent.

The message is a small sensation: a shortly published examination from Great Britain with more than 18,000 scientific publications including data of more than 52,000 examined patients shows that Seed Brachytherapy in the early stages might have higher chances of healing as clearly more stressful kinds of therapy such as operations. The more aggressive the cancer was, the more successful was the Seed Brachytherapy in the end, in the case of high-risk cancer in combination with external radiation.

Additionally a Germany-wide examination of a health insurance company showed recently that a fifth of all patients develop an acute complication after radical prostate surgery and later have a 20% incontinence rate and an 80% impotency rate. “This can be a thing of the past, if Brachytherapy prevails for suitable patients”, hopes Prof. Andreas Böhle.

The range of services of the urology includes:

  • Brachytherapy for prostate cancer
  • Transurethral resection and vaporisation of the prostate
  • Transurethral resection for bladder tumors
  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
  • Endoscopic treatment of urethral concretions (URS)
  • Incontinence-operations (ligaments & nets)
  • All operation of the outer genitals (phimosis, hydrocele or the like)
  • Chemotherapy due to bladder, prostate and testicle cancer
