Angina Pectoris

Angina pectoris often results in severe pain and a sensation of tightness in the chest, which is triggered by a circulatory disorder of the heart. The pain often spreads into the left arm. Angina pectoris comes from a constriction of the coronary vessels (arteriosclerosis) caused by calcification. This results in a lack of oxygen and nutrients in the heart, which is associated with painful episodes called angina pectoris attacks. Such an attack can particularly be caused by physical exertion or mental stress. An angina pectoris attack lasts from several seconds to several minutes. An attack is not a cardiac infarction, but can be a first symptom to an impending cardiac infarction.

Atrioventricular canal defect/endocardial cushion defect

Atrioventricular canal defect is a heart defect that is present at birth. It is often also associated with Down syndrome. Characteristic of atrioventricular canal defect are a hole between the heart’s chambers and problems with the valves that regulate blood flow through the heart.  The two most common types of atrioventricular canal defect are the partial and complete forms and both of these forms result in extra blood being circulated to the lungs. This in turn results in the heart being placed under extra burden and as a result the heart becomes enlarged. Atrioventricular canal defect is generally corrected within the first year of life. The recommended surgery is often a closure of the hole and a reconstruction of the valves. If left untreated, atrioventricular canal defect may cause congestive heart failure and high blood pressure in the lung circulation.

Aortic valve regurgitation

Aortic valve regurgitation occurs when the aortic valve of the heart does not close tightly enough to prevent blood from leaking through.  The aortic valve is situated between the heart’s main pumping chamber (the left ventricle) and the arteries that deliver blood to the rest of the body.  The aortic valve should close completely after each heart beat, thereby preventing blood from leaking back into the pumping chamber.  In aortic valve regurgitation however, the closing of the aortic valve is impaired and as a result, less blood is transported to the body.  Patients suffering from aortic valve regurgitation might feel tired or short of breath.  There are numerous causes of aortic valve regurgitation and it may arise gradually over several decades or all of a sudden.  In severe cases of aortic valve regurgitation, surgery is generally required to either repair or completely replace the aortic valve.

Aortic valve stenosis

Aortic valve stenosis or aortic stenosis is a state that occurs when the heart's aortic valve is constricted. This narrowing hinders the valve from opening correctly. It disables the blood flow from the heart into the aorta and further to the rest of the body. When the aortic valve is hindered, the heart has to work harder to pump blood into the body. In due course, the extra effort weakens the heart and restricts the amount of blood it can pump. Most often the aortic valve stenosis leads to symptoms, such as tiredness and dizziness. In severe cases of aortic valve stenosis, surgery to replace the valve is indicated. Not paying regards to an aortic valve stenosis can result in serious heart problems.

Arteriosclerosis

Arteries in good physical shape are elastic, physically powerful and flexible. In time, though, too much pressure in arteries can make the walls broad and inflexible. This progression carries the name arteriosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a definite type of arteriosclerosis. However the terms are regularly used interchangeably. Atherosclerosis refers to the plaques that have build up in an on your artery walls, which can limit blood flow. These plaques can as well burst, causing a blood clot. Even though atherosclerosis is often measured as a heart problem, it can distress arteries anywhere in your body.

Cardiac infarction

Cardiac infarction is a life-threatening disease. In a cardiac infarction, circulation and oxygen supply are interrupted in a specific area of the heart due to profound blockage of a coronary artery. If the occluded vessel is not reopened within a few hours via balloon dilatation or the use of special drugs (lysis therapy), part of the cardiac muscle dies as a result of the lack of oxygen and nutrients. In the event of more sustained pain attacks that cannot be interrupted with the prescribed drugs, a cardiac infarction must be suspected. In this case, the patient should call for medical assistance immediately.

Cardiac Insufficiency

With cardiac insufficiency or weak heart, the heart is no longer able to provide the organs and tissue with sufficient blood and therefore with oxygen and nutrients. The heart is not strong enough to meet the body's blood requirements. Cardiac insufficiency often shows symptomes such as breathlessness, dizziness and lack of energy - first during exertion and later at rest in affected patients.
