Pancreatic cancer

Cancer which has its beginning in the pancreas is called pancreatic cancer. When pancreatic cancer spreads, it generally moves through the lymphatic system. Physicians often take out lymph nodes in the vicinity of the pancreatic cancer to find out whether they hold cancer cells. Pancreatic cancer that overlaps to other organs is called metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic inflammation

Pancreatitis is tenderness of the pancreas. The pancreas produces several enzymes to support in the digestion of food, as well as the hormone insulin. Insulin controls the level of sugar in the blood. The pancreas is to be found in the upper abdomen, at the back the stomach. When the pancreas is inflames, the body is not able to absorb all the nutrients it needs. The Pancreatitis can arise as acute pancreatitis — meaning it appears abruptly and lasts for days. Or pancreatitis can occur as chronic pancreatitis, which describes pancreatitis that occurs over many years.

Peritonitis

The peritoneum is a thin, silky membrane that covers the abdominal organs and lines the inner walls of the abdomen. Lubricating fluid allows these abdominal organs to slide smoothly against each other, each within its own peritoneal ‘coat’. Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum, most commonly caused by a bacterial infection. Peritonitis is potentially life-threatening and therefore requires urgent medical attention. Symptoms of peritonitis may include severe, unrelenting abdominal pain, fever, nausea and the inability to pass stool.  Peritonitis may result from an injury that penetrates the abdominal wall (eg. stab wound), abdominal surgery, peritoneal dialysis or infections of abdominal organs that then spread to the surrounding peritoneum. Treatment of peritonitis generally involves medication therapy and surgery.
