Gallbladder cancer

Gallbladder cancer begins in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a little organ on the right side of your stomach below your liver. The gallbladder supplies bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver. Gallbladder cancer is exceptional. When gallbladder cancer is diagnosed at its most primitive stages, the chance to restore health is good. Gallbladder cancer is not easy to diagnose since it often shows no signs or symptoms. The fairly hidden position of the gallbladder makes it easier for gallbladder cancer to grow without being detected.

Gallstones

Gallstones are relatively common, crystalline deposits of solidified bile, a digestive fluid stored in the gallbladder.  The gallbladder is situated on the right side of the abdomen directly beneath the liver.  Gallstones may range from being as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball and people may develop one or more gallstones.  Smaller gallstones often do not exhibit symptoms and do not require treatment.  Larger gallstones may become lodged at various points, causing intense pain.  In such cases the gallbladder usually has to be removed.

Gastric cancer

Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, occurs in the stomach, a muscular sac that receives and stores food that is eaten, preparing it for further digestion.  The most common kind of stomach cancer originates in glandular cells that line the inside of the stomach and produce mucous.  Stomach cancer often does not exhibit specific symptoms until a relatively late stage of the cancer.  Unfortunately, if first detected at a late stage, the prognosis of stomach cancer is often poor.  Treatment of stomach cancer may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive condition whereby stomach acid is regurgitated from the stomach into the lower portion of the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat with the stomach.  The stomach acid then irritates the lining of the esophagus, causing the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease.  A common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease is heartburn. Although the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease are occasionally experienced even by healthy people, should they arise several times a week or act as impairment to daily life they are then termed gastroesophageal reflux disease.  While the symptoms of heartburn can be managed with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications, people with gastroesophageal reflux disease may require other therapies such as stronger medications or even surgery. Inguinal hernia

Inguinal hernias arise when a portion of the abdominal content (often part of the intestine) protrudes through a weak spot of the lower abdominal wall.  This is manifested as a bulge in the lower abdomen, which usually isn’t painful and which recedes when lying down.  The bulge of an inguinal hernia becomes more pronounced when standing, coughing or lifting a heavy object.  Although many inguinal hernias are not inherently dangerous, they may lead to life-threatening complications such strangulated bowel, a painful condition whereby a piece of intestine is ‘pinched’ at the hernia which then impairs its blood supply, resulting in death of intestinal tissue.  Inguinal hernias are therefore corrected with surgery extremely often.  This is one of the most common surgical procedures and success rates are very high.

Intestinal obstruction

Intestinal obstruction is a medical emergency that occurs when the small intestine or colon becomes blocked, preventing the bowel contents from passing through.  There are many known causes for intestinal obstruction including adhesions in the intestine (impeding fibrous tissue eg. resulting from previous surgery), tumours, hernias and the lodgement of foreign bodies within the digestive tract.  Intestinal obstruction can be accompanied by numerous symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling and constipation.  If untreated, intestinal obstruction can result in the death of portions of the digestive tract which may then lead to life-threatening conditions.  Treatment of intestinal obstruction often requires urgent surgical intervention.

Keyhole operations

Keyhole surgery, which is also well-known under the term ‘minimally invasive surgery’, means that the medical doctor can operate the equipment from exterior of the body whilst looking at the monitor. There exist numerous different types of conservative surgical procedure which can now be performed using keyhole surgery and the benefits to the patient are very noteworthy. These include less pain, smallest scarring, faster recovery post operation and a quicker resumption of normal daily activities.

Kidney cancer/renal cancer

The kidneys are fist-sized, bean-shaped organs, located on each side of the spine and situated behind the organs of the abdomen.  Kidney cancer can occur in people of all ages.  The type of kidney cancer that usually arises in adults is called renal cell carcinoma.  Renal cell carcinoma originates in the cells of the small tubes within the kidneys.  Surgery is often the preferred method of treatment if the renal cell carcinoma has not yet spread to other organs.  If the cancer has already spread, treatment becomes considerably more difficult.  In children, the most common type of kidney cancer is Wilms’ tumor.  Wilms’ tumor responds well to treatment, which may involve a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.  Kidney cancer often does not show any signs or symptoms in the early stages, making it difficult to detect.  In advanced stages, signs or symptoms of kidney cancer may include blood in the urine and a palpable lump in the kidney area.  Less often, one may experience fatigue, weight loss and persistent pain in the sides.

Kidney cysts

Kidney cysts are fluid-filled sacs that originate in the kidneys, the bean-shaped and fist-sized organs located on both sides of the spine and behind the abdominal organs. The most common type of kidney cysts are found in many people over the age of 50, are non-cancerous and often do not give rise to any complaints, signs or symptoms and therefore do not require treatment. However, if a kidney cyst becomes large enough to press against other organs nearby, symptoms may arise and surgical removal may be necessary. In rare cases, numerous kidney cysts may develop and cause the kidney to enlarge substantially which may result in kidney failure.
