Thrombophlebitis

Thrombophlebitis refers to when a blood clot lodges in a vein - typically of the legs – and causes the vein to become inflamed. This can result in swelling, pain and redness at the site of the thrombophlebitis. Thrombophlebitis can result from blood clotting disorders or periods of prolonged inactivity.  If thrombophlebitis occurs in a vein close to the surface of the skin, varicose veins may result.  If it occurs in a vein deep under the skin, it can lead to the condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).  Deep vein thrombosis can lead to serious problems, such as pulmonary embolism (a blocking of blood vessels in the lungs by a dislodged blood clot). Therefore thrombophlebitis should be taken seriously and treated as necessary. Treatment of thrombophlebitis may include medication, surgery or conservative measures.
