Gangrene is a word that describes dead or fading body tissue(s) that arise since the local blood supply to the tissue is either lost or is insufficient to keep the tissue alive. Gangrene has been known since ancient times. Even though many common people relate the term gangrene with a bacterial infection, medicine uses the word to describe whichever cause that compromises the blood supply that results in tissue death. As a result, an individual can have gangrene but is not "infected."
