Penile fracture

A penile fracture is a painful injury that may arise from trauma to the penis while it is erect.  This is often the result of aggressive sexual activity.  Cylinder-like structures within the penis become filled with blood during an erection.  If an erect penis is bent with force, the lining of these cylinders may rupture, resulting in a penile fracture.  This rupturing is often characterised by a cracking sound followed immediately by a dark bruising of the penis.  Cases of penile fracture are a medical emergency and generally require surgical treatment.  If left untreated, penile fractures may result in erectile dysfunction or deformities of the penis.

Peyronie’s disease

Peyronie’s disease refers to a condition of the penis which is characterised by the formation of abnormal, fibrous lumps, or plaques, inside the erectile tissue of the penis.  The presence of these plaques often results in a bent or kinked erection which may be painful, uncomfortable or embarrassing for those suffering Peyronie’s disease.  Although the exact cause of Peyronie’s disease is unknown, it is thought to occur as both an inherited disorder and following a penis injury.  Peyronie’s disease is generally only treated when it is painful or it hinders a person from having a satisfactory sex life.  Peyronie’s disease may be treated with medications, penile injections or penis surgery.

Prostate cancer

The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland in males that produces a component of semen.  Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in males.  The key to successfully treating prostate cancer is early detection, as the cancer often has not spread in the early stages.  As symptoms often do not arise in the early stages of prostate cancer, most cases are detected during routine screening of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels or during a rectal examination.  Possible symptoms of prostate cancer may include problems urinating or blood in the urine or semen.  Treatment of prostate cancer depends on several factors (age, cancer growth rate, potential side effects) and can involve radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy or surgical removal of the prostate (prostatectomy).

Prostate gland enlargement

Prostate gland enlargement is common in middle-aged men and in fact, the prostates of most men experience increased growth beginning in their mid 40s.  The prostate gland is a male organ that produces fluid that makes up an important component of the male ejaculate. The prostate surrounds the urethra, the tube that transports urine from the bladder to the penis.  Therefore, in prostate gland enlargement, the prostate can place pressure on the urethra and cause difficulties when urinating. Depending on the symptoms, prostate gland enlargement can be treated in a number of ways including with medication, surgery or with nonsurgical therapy. Prostate gland enlargement is not related to the development of prostate cancer.
