Interstitial cystitis

Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome is a chronic condition of unknown cause which occurs most commonly in women.  Interstitial cystitis is generally characterised by symptoms which include bladder pain (which increases when the bladder is full and is alleviated with urination), increased bladder pressure, pelvic pain, frequent urination, the need to urinate at night and pain during sexual intercourse.  The degree of pain associated with interstitial cystitis is highly variable, ranging from mild discomfort to extreme pain.  Although there is no complete cure for interstitial cystitis, numerous treatments are available which may relieve symptoms.
