Myofascial pain syndrome

Myofascial pain syndrome is a type of chronic muscle pain that is caused when so-called ‘trigger points’ are touched or irritated.  Trigger points are sensitive knots within muscles which can elicit painful sensations that may then radiate out into the entire muscle.  People suffering from myofascial pain syndrome have persisting pain that generally becomes worse over time.  Many types of common pain (for instance, headaches, neck pain, lower back pain) have now been associated with myofascial pain syndrome.  Treatment of myofascial pain syndrome may involve physical therapy, medications or trigger point injections.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, also referred to as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis.  Osteoarthritis arises when the cartilage and underlying bone in joints of the body get worn down over time.  This results in joint pain and stiffness and normally osteoarthritis gets gradually worse and can lead to chronic disability.  The joints of the body most often affected by osteoarthritis are the knees, hips, hands, neck and the lower back.  Although there is no cure for osteoarthritis, treatment is available that helps to relieve pain.  Furthermore, physical therapy, medical aids, conservative therapy or surgical therapy may also be available.

Osteochondritis dissecans

Osteochondritis dissecans is a disorder that arises when cracks appear in the cartilage and underlying bone at the end of a bone within a joint.  This may cause a fragment of bone to become detached, which can then cause joint pain.  In most cases of osteochondritis dissecans the knee is affected, although the hip, elbow and ankle may also be prone to damage.  Although the exact cause of osteochondritis dissecans remains unknown, it may arise as a result of impaired blood supply to a portion of the affected bone, physical trauma or due to hereditary disorders.  Osteochondritis dissecans typically occurs in young, active individuals and its treatment involves either surgical or non-surgical measures, depending on the severity of the case, the patient’s age and other factors.  If prompt treatment is received, there are good chances of recovery.
