Gallbladder cancer

Gallbladder cancer begins in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a little organ on the right side of your stomach below your liver. The gallbladder supplies bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver. Gallbladder cancer is exceptional. When gallbladder cancer is diagnosed at its most primitive stages, the chance to restore health is good. Gallbladder cancer is not easy to diagnose since it often shows no signs or symptoms. The fairly hidden position of the gallbladder makes it easier for gallbladder cancer to grow without being detected.

Hirschsprung’s disease

Children affected by Hirschsprung’s disease are born with a disorder of the large intestine, resulting in problems with bowel movements. In Hirschsprung’s disease, a portion of the child’s large intestine lacks certain nerve cells responsible for controlling the muscular activity in this portion of the digestive tract.  This can result in constipation and problems with absorbing nutrients from food.  As a result of the lack of bowel movements, a further characteristic of Hirschsprung’s disease is that the large intestine becomes enlarged at the affected site.  In mild cases of Hirschsprung’s disease, the disorder may not be detected until later on in life. Treatment of Hirschsprung’s disease involves the surgical removal of the affected portion of the child’s large intestine.  This treatment is often an affective way of dealing with the disorder.

Huntington’s disease

Huntington’s disease is a genetic disease that usually develops during middle age.  It can however also affect younger people and an earlier onset of the disease is often associated with a more rapid progression in symptoms.  Huntington’s disease is characterised by progressive, degenerative changes to nerve cells in the brain, resulting in various symptoms such as uncontrolled movements and emotional and mental disturbances.  While medications are available to help manage the symptoms of Huntington’s disease, unfortunately there is still no cure for this condition and its associated mental and physical decline.

Hypospadias

Hypospadias are one of the most common birth defects in males. Hypospadia refers to a condition whereby the opening of the urethra - the tube that connects the urinary bladder with the penis - is situated on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip.  Hypospadias are generally corrected surgically within the first year of life with a high rate of success.  If other birth defects are also present alongside hypospadia or in severe cases of hypospadia, more complex treatment may be required.

Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a relatively common condition which affects the colon (large intestine).  Common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include abdominal pain, bloating, cramps, diarrhea and/or constipation however, these are not attributable to any underlying cause.  Unlike other disorders of the intestines (eg. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome does not result in permanent damage to the tissue of the colon and it is generally a less serious condition.  The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can often be managed by altering diet, lifestyle and stress factors.

Kidney infection

Kidney infections, also referred to as pyelonephritis, are a type of infection of the urinary tract which originate in the bladder or urethra and travel up into the kidneys.  Infections of the urinary tract may be characterised by symptoms such as a need to urinate more often, even if only a few drops, a burning sensation when urinating, blood in the urine or a feeling of having a full bladder even after urination.  If the infection reaches the kidneys, in addition to these symptoms, one may experience chills, fever and pain in the lower abdomen and back.  Kidney infection is a serious condition requiring prompt medical attention in order to avoid permanent damage to the kidneys or life-threatening complications.  Often, kidney infections are treated with antibiotics and require hospitalisation.

Kidney stones

Kidney stones, also known as renal lithiasis, are small, hard, mineralised deposits that develop on the inner surface of the kidneys.  When the urine becomes too concentrated with particular substances, these substances crystallise and solidify, forming hard kidney stones that are no longer soluble in the urine.  Extreme pain is often associated with passing kidney stones and if stones block urinary flow, kidney infection, damage or even failure can result.  There are various options available for the treatment of kidney stones and while most cases of kidney stones do not require surgery, pain medication is usually needed to deal with symptoms.  Often making dietary changes and drinking more water can prevent kidney stones from recurring.
