Interstitial lung disease

Interstitial lung disease refers to a number of conditions which generally result in progressive damage and subsequent scarring in lung tissue.  The replacement of healthy lung tissue with scar tissue can then reduce the ability of the lungs to transport enough oxygen to the blood, causing breathing difficulties.  Apart from this common factor, the disorders classed as interstitial lung disease may vary widely in their characteristics.  Interstitial lung disease may arise suddenly or progress over long periods of time and in many cases no cause can be identified.  As in many other disorders of the lungs, once the damage of interstitial lung disease has occurred, it is generally irreversible and many people do not regain full use of their lungs.  However there are treatments available that can potentially slow down the deterioration of the lungs caused by interstitial lung disease.
