Legg-Calve-Perthes disease

Legg-Calve-Perthes disease affects children and is characterised by damage to the hip joint resulting from a loss of blood supply.  Legg-Calve-Perthes disease occurs most commonly in white males between the ages of 4-8 and typically develops in one hip, although in some cases both hips can be affected.  The prognosis of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is best for younger children, as more time is available for the necessary hip reshaping.  Legg-Calve-Perthes disease may be treated in various ways, including surgery.

Osteochondritis dissecans

Osteochondritis dissecans is a disorder that arises when cracks appear in the cartilage and underlying bone at the end of a bone within a joint.  This may cause a fragment of bone to become detached, which can then cause joint pain.  In most cases of osteochondritis dissecans the knee is affected, although the hip, elbow and ankle may also be prone to damage.  Although the exact cause of osteochondritis dissecans remains unknown, it may arise as a result of impaired blood supply to a portion of the affected bone, physical trauma or due to hereditary disorders.  Osteochondritis dissecans typically occurs in young, active individuals and its treatment involves either surgical or non-surgical measures, depending on the severity of the case, the patient’s age and other factors.  If prompt treatment is received, there are good chances of recovery.

Osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis is an infection that occurs within a bone and is usually caused by bacteria.  The bacteria may reach the bone via the bloodstream, spread from a nearby tissue or invade a fractured or damaged bone.  Osteomyelitis typically occurs in the long bones of the body (leg and upper arm bones), pelvis or spine.  Symptoms that may arise from osteomyelitis include bone pain, inflammation (redness, heat and swelling) in the affected body region, and reduced movement in the affected body region, muscle spasms, fatigue and fever.  Treatment of osteomyelitis usually involves a combination of antibiotics and surgery, although surgery may not be necessary in some cases.
