Torn meniscus

The menisci are C-shaped pieces of cartilage in the knees.  Two menisci are present in each knee joint - one on the inner, the other on the outer side of the knee - and they function to absorb impact in the knees and distribute pressure evenly over the joint.  A torn meniscus is a painful injury that may be incurred by twisting the knee while it bears the body’s full weight, for instance during sporting activities.  In older patients, a torn meniscus may arise as a result of degenerative changes to the cartilage of the knees.  While some cases of torn meniscus heal by themselves with rest, in more serious tears, surgery may be required.

Trauma to spinal column

Trauma to the spinal column can result in symptoms of varying severity, depending on the extent and location of injury.  Paralysis, pain or disturbed motor function and/or sensitivity may arise from trauma to the spinal column, along with numerous functional disorders.  Due to the highly important structures within the spinal column (spinal cord and nerves – for more information, see spinal column degeneration), it is essential that these structures are not pressed upon as a consequence of trauma to the spinal column.  Furthermore, the vertebrae that compose the spinal column must be stabilised and relieved of unnecessary burden if they have become damaged.  Operative techniques for the treatment of trauma to the spinal column are varied depending on the nature of the injury.
