Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is one of the most common inherited neurological conditions. It affects the nerves of the arms and legs and leads to reduced sensation, muscle weakness and decreased muscle mass. The symptoms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease generally arise first in the feet and legs and tend to get slowly worse with time. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease often results in an impaired gait and can be very painful. Although there is no cure for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, treatment involves medication to reduce painful symptoms, orthopaedic devices or surgery to stabilise affected limbs and physical therapy to strengthen the affected muscles.
