Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that affects some women during pregnancy.  As in other forms of diabetes, gestational diabetes inhibits the body’s proper use of glucose, which is the body’s main source of energy.  While the high blood sugar levels associated with gestational diabetes usually do not have adverse effects for the pregnant mother, they can cause health problems for the unborn child.  Generally gestational diabetes can be managed with a healthy diet and regular exercise.  In some cases anti-diabetic medication may also be necessary.

Glomerulonephritis / glomerular disease

Glomerulonephritis is a disease of the kidney that impairs the kidney’s ability to filter waste substances and excess fluids out of the blood. Glomerulonephritis can arise either suddenly or gradually and it can be caused by another underlying diseases (eg. diabetes) or arise all on its own. The type of treatment required depends on what kind of glomerulonephritis a person has and its underlying cause.

IgA nephropathy

IgA nephropathy or Berger’s disease is a common disease of the kidneys that occurs when IgA, a protein involved in the body’s immune defense against infections, becomes lodged in the kidney.  The kidney’s ability to filter waste from the blood is then impaired and over time this can lead to various symptoms such as high blood pressure, blood and/or protein in the urine and swollen hands and feet.  After decades of IgA nephropathy, the kidneys may become permanently damaged, leading to kidney failure.  Patients may then require dialysis or kidney transplantation.  Before reaching this advanced stage, IgA nephropathy is often handled by keeping blood pressure and cholesterol at healthy levels.

Kidney cancer/renal cancer

The kidneys are fist-sized, bean-shaped organs, located on each side of the spine and situated behind the organs of the abdomen.  Kidney cancer can occur in people of all ages.  The type of kidney cancer that usually arises in adults is called renal cell carcinoma.  Renal cell carcinoma originates in the cells of the small tubes within the kidneys.  Surgery is often the preferred method of treatment if the renal cell carcinoma has not yet spread to other organs.  If the cancer has already spread, treatment becomes considerably more difficult.  In children, the most common type of kidney cancer is Wilms’ tumor.  Wilms’ tumor responds well to treatment, which may involve a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.  Kidney cancer often does not show any signs or symptoms in the early stages, making it difficult to detect.  In advanced stages, signs or symptoms of kidney cancer may include blood in the urine and a palpable lump in the kidney area.  Less often, one may experience fatigue, weight loss and persistent pain in the sides.

Kidney infection

Kidney infections, also referred to as pyelonephritis, are a type of infection of the urinary tract which originate in the bladder or urethra and travel up into the kidneys.  Infections of the urinary tract may be characterised by symptoms such as a need to urinate more often, even if only a few drops, a burning sensation when urinating, blood in the urine or a feeling of having a full bladder even after urination.  If the infection reaches the kidneys, in addition to these symptoms, one may experience chills, fever and pain in the lower abdomen and back.  Kidney infection is a serious condition requiring prompt medical attention in order to avoid permanent damage to the kidneys or life-threatening complications.  Often, kidney infections are treated with antibiotics and require hospitalisation.

Kidney stones

Kidney stones, also known as renal lithiasis, are small, hard, mineralised deposits that develop on the inner surface of the kidneys.  When the urine becomes too concentrated with particular substances, these substances crystallise and solidify, forming hard kidney stones that are no longer soluble in the urine.  Extreme pain is often associated with passing kidney stones and if stones block urinary flow, kidney infection, damage or even failure can result.  There are various options available for the treatment of kidney stones and while most cases of kidney stones do not require surgery, pain medication is usually needed to deal with symptoms.  Often making dietary changes and drinking more water can prevent kidney stones from recurring.
