Liver cancer

Liver cancer affects the liver, a large organ situated on the upper right side of the abdomen and predominantly covered by the ribcage.  Although many other types of cancers spread to the liver from other parts of the body and are termed ‘metastatic cancer’, liver cancer is cancer that originates in the cells of the liver.  Depending on the type of liver cancer, there may be various possibilities for treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Leukemia

Leukemia is a cancer of the body’s blood-producing system, which includes the bone marrow and lymphatic system.  Generally, leukemia originates in the white blood cells, important cells of the body’s immune system.  In a healthy person, the number of white blood cells multiplies rapidly when required (eg. to fight an infection).  In people with leukemia, a large number of abnormal and non-functioning white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow.  There are many different types of leukemia and people of all ages can be affected.  Treatment depends on the type of leukemia and may require medications, radiation therapy or in some cases, bone marrow transplantation.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death, responsible for 1.3 million deaths worldwide each year. Symptoms of lung cancer include shortness of breath, coughing up blood and weight loss. The most significant risk factor for developing lung cancer by far is smoking, which accounts for almost 90 percent of cases. The risk of developing lung cancer is therefore dramatically reduced by abstinence from smoking. Other risk factors for developing lung cancer include exposure to asbestos or radon gas, particular genetic factors and passive smoking. Depending on the type of lung cancer, treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Myelofibrosis

Myelofibrosis is a serious disease of the bone marrow whereby the body is no longer able to produce adequate blood cells.  In myelofibrosis, an abnormal type of cell in the bone marrow proliferates and replaces much of the bone marrow with connective tissue.  This may result in fatigue, weakness, bone pain, anemia, easy bruising and bleeding.  The spleen and liver are also often enlarged.  While myelofibrosis can arise at any age, it most commonly affects people over 50.  Treatment of myelofibrosis involves managing the symptoms and this can potentially provide relief for several years.  Unfortunately, many cases of myelofibrosis become progressively worse and in some cases a serious form of leukemia develops.

Myelodysplastic syndromes

Myelodysplastic syndromes are disorders that are characterised by dysfunctional blood cells due to problems in their production, which takes place in the bone marrow.  Myelodysplastic syndromes are often asymptomatic at first, which means that there are often no initial, outward signs of the disease.  Individuals with a myelodysplastic syndrome are therefore often first identified when a routine blood count is carried out which shows abnormalities in their blood cells.  If left untreated, myelodysplastic syndromes may progress to leukemia.  Therefore treatment for myelodysplastic syndromes is aimed at hindering this progression, controlling symptoms and improving quality of life.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that arises in immune cells of the lymphatic system. Normally these cells (lymphocytes) are involved in fighting disease. However, in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, they proliferate in an uncontrolled manner. There are numerous different kinds of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma which have different levels of severity and are therefore treated differently. The earlier non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is diagnosed, the better it can be handled and the higher the rates of success. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, antibody therapy or stem cell transplantation.

Oesophageal cancer

Ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer refers to tumors that originate in the ovaries.  There are four different types of ovarian cancer, depending on what part of the ovary the tumor arises in.  Symptoms of ovarian cancer may include abdominal, back or pelvic pain, a feeling of being bloated or full, difficulty eating, changes in bowel habits and increased urinary urgency.  The key to treating ovarian cancer effectively is early detection and it is often diagnosed by undergoing a pelvic examination and having a blood test and an ultrasound examination done.  Early detection is important as it allows the ovarian cancer to be treated before it spreads to other areas of the body.  Treatment often involves surgery and chemotherapy and sometimes radiation therapy.
