Pinched nerve

A pinched nerve occurs when a nerve is pressed on from the surrounding tissues. These tissues may include muscles, bones or tendons. This can result in an impaired function of the affected nerve and may cause numbness, weakness, tingling or pain. While a pinched nerve can occur anywhere in the body, certain areas are more prone than others, for instance the lower spine (following a slipped disc) or in the wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome).  The symptoms of a pinched nerve may clear up with rest and conservative treatments.  However, if the pain and symptoms of a pinched nerve persist, treatment in the form of medication (to relieve pain), physical therapy or surgery (to relieve pressure placed on the nerve) may be required.

Saddle joint arthrosis (rhizarthorisis)

The saddle joint is located at the base of the thumb, close to the wrist. Saddle joint arthrosis refers to inflammation in the saddle joint, usually as a result of years of wear and tear. More often occurring in women, symptoms usually arise during middle age when pain develops during normal activities, such as opening a bottle or holding a newspaper. This pain may initially be stress or wheather-dependant and occur only sporadically. Treatment of saddle joint arthrosis is often conservative to begin with, with anti-inflammatory medication or a thumb splint being applied. If this is not effective or if the saddle joint arthrosis progresses, surgery may be required to relieve symptoms.
