Rectocele

A rectocele refers to when the tough wall of tissue (fascia) that separates the rectum from the vagina becomes weakened, resulting in a bulging of the rectum into the vagina.  The fascia may be weak as a result of multiple childbirths.  The decreased levels of estrogen in post-menopausal women also plays a role in the development of rectocele, as estrogen helps to keep the tissues in the pelvis strong.  In mild cases of rectocele, simple exercises to strengthen the pelvic area may be effective.  In more severe cases of rectocele, a pessary may be fitted in the vagina that supports the area of the vaginal wall through which the bulging occurs.  Surgery may also be an option in more severe cases of rectocele.

Rectovaginal fistula

A rectovaginal fistula refers to an abnormal connection between the rectum and the vagina.  This may result in bowel contents and gas passing through the vagina, rather than the anus.  This can be both considerably painful and distressing for women suffering from rectovaginal fistula.  Causes of rectovaginal fistula may include injuries maintained during childbirth, inflammatory bowel disease and complications arising from surgery.  The treatment of rectovaginal fistulas usually involves corrective surgery.
