Thrombocytopenia

Thrombocytopenia refers to a low level of platelets (thrombocytes) in the blood.  Platelets are a type of blood cell that plays a vital role in blood clotting.  If the level of platelets in the blood is lower than normal, a person may be more prone to bleeding, both internally and externally.  Signs of thrombocytopenia may therefore include nosebleeds or increased bruising, although often there are no manifest signs or symptoms.  There are numerous causes of thrombocytopenia including but not limited to infection, vitamin deficiency, genetic disorders, medication side effects, liver failure and leukemia.  Treatment of thrombocytopenia therefore focuses on targeting the underlying problem.  In severe cases of thrombocytopenia, a blood or platelet transfusion may be necessary.

Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which causes chronic inflammation in the digestive tract.  Common symptoms of ulcerative colitis are diarrhea (often containing blood) and abdominal pain.  As in Crohn’s disease - a similar condition - ulcerative colitis can potentially lead to fatal complications.  Generally ulcerative colitis only affects the inner lining of the colon (large intestine) and rectum.  Although there is currently no cure for ulcerative colitis, there are therapies that can reduce the severity of the symptoms and potentially provide long-term remission.  For certain cases, surgery may also be an option to provide relief.
